2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Derek-Stingley-Jr260x360

Pro's:

  • Has a great prototypical size of a cornerback combined with exceptional athleticism, he has proven throughout college that he can go toe to toe with the fastest receivers.
  • Excellent physicality and toughness make him comfortable in press man. He can match up against the bigger and more physical receivers.
  • Very good in man coverage and does a good job of keeping up with receivers.
  • At his best in press coverage. Not overly physical but will get his hands on opposing players to help anticipate breaks when going downfield.
  • He has good long-speed which can help him close down any gaps with ease.
  • Insane eye discipline. Possibly the best in the class.
  • Uses the sideline to his advantage and will force receivers out of bounds at the catch point.
  • An impressive vertical makes it easy to attack the catchpoint aggressively and will swat the ball away.
  • Possesses very good hands that will convert opportunities into interceptions.

Con's:

  • Injuries over the past two years have seen Stingley Jr. miss over half of the LSU Tigers games.
  • Often looks timid in zone coverage, not looked anywhere near as dominant as he does in man coverage.
  • Needs to be more urgent when tackling. He is more than capable of being the last man in defense due to his incredible speed and physical attributes, not seen enough of it though.

The Verdict:

“A five star recruit out of high school and was one of the top ranked corners in the Nation. After a successful high school career he received 25 offers, committing to the LSU Tigers. As a freshman Stingley Jr. picked up where he left off in high school. He recorded 38 tackles and led the SEC Conference with 6 interceptions. This led to him receiving first-team All-SEC honors. The following two years though have been hampered by injuries, missing over half of the Tigers' games. In 2020, Stingley Jr. featured 7 times for LSU and across that span he racked up 27 tackles and 2.5 tackles for a loss, despite this he still received first-team All-SEC honors. In this past season, he only managed 3 games as he re-aggravated a left foot injury that he needed surgery on and ruled him out for the season.”
