Film Watched: Baylor 2021, West Virginia 2021, Texas Tech 2021

Pro's:

  • Smooth, agile safety who can command large zones with comfort
  • Impressive range; more than capable with half-field responsibilities, and probably full field width too
  • Showcases excellent awareness in zone coverage, diagnosing order of threats and route combos
  • Immediate trigger to the football. Anticipates, sees it, and acts on it instantly
  • Loose hips make man coverage look simple. Elegant backpedal and effortless transitions
  • Plays with incredible aggression against the run. Stampedes downhill to meet the ball carrier
  • Thick muscular frame that packs a punch on contact
  • Developed some ball skills his final season in Norman, with three interceptions recorded in 2021

Con's:

  • Fire and brimstone attitude gets him in trouble – frequently comes in hot and over pursues
  • Looks to add a little extra juice on each hit, and tackling can suffer as a result
  • Over-eagerness to steal a yard to the action makes him susceptible to misdirection
  • Concedes height and weight advantage to tight ends and big slots in man coverage
  • Gets caught on downblocks too easily, and struggles to disengage

The Verdict:

“Delarrin Turner-Yell is an intriguing blend of traits that allows the former Sooner to do a lot of things, but doesn’t quite deliver the full package in any particular role. The first thing you notice when you watch the tape is his speed; DTY flies around the field and is always in and amongst the action. Turner-Yell has all the quicks to keep up with receivers or make it to the catch point but has challenges affecting the reception due to a lack of height. In the run game, Turner-Yell brings the tenacity and physicality you hope for but with a disregard for the discipline the role demands, and for every big play he makes he can be guilty of giving up big gains. DTY’s urgency is suited to special teams, and if he can add some finesse his ceiling is perhaps as a rotational split-safety with both run and pass responsibilities.”
