Pro's:

  • Big-boy corner with excellent weight distribution across his frame. Built for life as an outside corner
  • Plays with a swagger – very confident in his ability to neutralise a receiver
  • Has a nose for the football – nine interceptions and THIRTY-FIVE passes defended at Cincinnati
  • Good instincts in zone – understands traffic in and out of his area and negates threats well
  • Good eye discipline helps him break on the football and arrive timely to make the play
  • Appreciate his body usage down the sidelines to constrict a receiver’s room to operate
  • Relatively smooth mover in off-man; graceful backpedal and fluid through his transitions
  • Has the strength to shed outside blocs and get involved against the run

Con's:

  • Agility tested against shifty route runners, who find separation from him through sharp breaks
  • Will struggle to hip-ride deep threats with elite speed all the way down the field
  • Gets a little grabby early when he knows he’s up against a vertical speedster
  • Want to see a little more physicality in press – doesn’t disrupt a receiver going into his route stem
  • Wild tackler – goes for the money shot rather than wrapping up the opponent, and has missed more than his fair share

The Verdict:

“Sauce Gardner might be the Cincinnati cornerback whose name is on everyone’s lips this draft cycle, but don’t sleep on his partner in crime Coby Bryant, who brings a very polished and productive skillset to the pro’s. Bryant ticks a lot of boxes that scouts look for in a modern day outside corner - size, length, physicality and the playmaking ability to impact the momentum in football games. Bryant is comfortable operating in different coverages but probably does his best work in zone, where his instincts are allowed to take over a little more. He’s got less short-area agility than you’d hope for, and that might be more exposed in the NFL. But ultimately he’s a moderate-level starter at the next level, and should come off the board sometime on day two.”
