2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Purdy

Film Watched: Texas 2021, Baylor 2021, TCU 2020

Pro's:

  • Elusive, athletic quarterback who can escape pressure and make game changing plays
  • Scrambling ability is dangerous; defenses must respect his ability to break contain
  • Effortless delivery with smooth throwing mechanics
  • Ball comes out quick and clean, with some serious zip when needed
  • Eager to attack the sidelines and trusts his receivers in one on one matchups
  • Shows nice touch on occasion – can adjust velocity as the situation dictates
  • Demonstrates good accuracy when throwing on the run
  • Impressive internal clock and has the quick feet to navigate the pocket
  • Not a total gunslinger but won’t be found wanting in shootouts – not afraid to take shots
  • Works through his progressions in a clean pocket, checks down well under duress

Con's:

  • Subpar arm strength mitigates his desire to attack the deep field with consistent accuracy
  • Accuracy is fine on short to intermediate throws, but ball placement doesn’t lead receivers
  • Ball can sail on him on more simpler passes
  • Accuracy drops off noticeably the further downfield he targets – often short arms deep balls
  • Runs with the ball away from his body, asking for trouble
  • A little too confident – too many danger throws or attempts to force it into tight windows
  • Very much a rhythm quarterback – will have highs and lows in every single game
  • Zero experience in a pro style offense, operating exclusively out of the shotgun in Ames

The Verdict:

“Brock Purdy is a name college football fans will be familiar with as the Iowa State football program rose to prominence with him under center. There is no doubt that Purdy has been critical to the success of the Cyclones; a four year starter with more than 12,000 passing yards, 1,200 rushing yards and 100 total TD’s is not something this team is accustomed to. It’s very easy to look at Purdy’s lack of arm strength as a reason why he can’t have a pro career, but out of all of these day three/UDFA guys he’s the one that I would take a shot on. He has that balance of being able to operate within a framework but also the ability to create on the fly when needed, and I can see him being a backup that may turn a few heads if he ever got thrown into a game.”
