2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Brown

Film Watched: Utah 2021, Ohio State 2021, Virginia Tech 2019

Pro's:

  • Brings the measurables; has the requisite height and build for a conventional NFL quarterback
  • High football IQ and film room dedication make him prepared every time he steps to the LOS
  • Good communicator with complete control over his offense
  • Excellent defensive scheme recognition with the ability to counter and target weaknesses
  • Strong eye discipline, and can manipulate safeties before release
  • Good accuracy but even better ball placement, particularly on sideline routes (back shoulder)
  • Modest athletic ability but able to move chains with infrequent scrambles

Con's:

  • Operated exclusively out of the shotgun at Oregon,
  • Maddening inconsistency – superman one game (Ohio State), ineffective the next (Utah)
  • Uncomfortable sitting in the pocket; feet get antsy, hand starts patting the football
  • At his best operating a quick-fire offense with short routes to guys in space – he’s not the difference maker
  • Long wind-up on deep balls, with a rather slow release
  • Can move the sticks with his legs, but not keen on operating off-script – lack of creativity
  • Needs to show better understanding of situational football; throws short of the sticks on 3rd down

The Verdict:

“Anthony Brown is going to be a polarising prospect in this draft. On a good day, the Oregon QB can take apart one of the best teams in the nation with a detailed understanding of the opponent and clinical execution of a (mostly) spread offense. On a bad day, he will frustrate you by being ultra-conservative and banking on his playmakers to win the game for you. As an NFL scout, Brown would be a hard sell to your coaching team - the upside is low, despite his on-field smarts and dedication to his playbook. How do you make Brown become a more consistent quarterback? A more attacking, aggressive quarterback? At his worst, Brown is a passenger in an offense schemed to the strength of others, and at his best he’s a game manager who will win you games as well as not lose them. At the next level, that’s not the ceiling you set in pursuit of a Super Bowl.”
