Rams and 49ers Take NFL Rivalry Down Under

There are plenty of ways to make a regular-season NFL game feel like an event. Put two division rivals in a 100,000-seat stadium on the other side of the world, however, and you’re probably onto something.
The Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers will make history this week when they meet at Melbourne Cricket Ground, in the NFL’s first ever regular-season game in Australia. For British viewers, that means a very late Thursday night becoming a very early Friday morning — but for the Australians filling the MCG, it promises to be quite the introduction to NFL football.
And what a game they’ve got. This isn’t an exhibition dressed up as an international spectacle. These are two teams with very real ambitions in the NFC West, meeting in Week 1 with plenty to prove.
The Rams arrive with perhaps the biggest expectations of all. Los Angeles has been aggressive in its pursuit of a championship, most notably bringing in Myles Garrett and coaxing future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald out of retirement. Donald, however, won’t make his much-anticipated return in Melbourne, leaving Garrett to make his Rams debut as the centrepiece of a defense expected to be considerably nastier than the one that finished last season.
On the other side, San Francisco arrives with a familiar-looking offense and one of the NFL’s most dangerous weapons in Christian McCaffrey. Brock Purdy will be looking to get the 49ers’ passing game rolling, while Kyle Shanahan will inevitably have a few wrinkles ready for a Rams defense that has undergone a significant makeover.
It is, in other words, a proper NFC West scrap — just one being played approximately 8,500 miles from California.

The most fascinating part of this game might actually begin before either offense takes the field. The two teams have taken completely different approaches to the journey; San Francisco travelled to Australia more than a week before kickoff, giving the players time to adjust to the enormous time difference and settle into Melbourne life. The 49ers have even embraced the occasion, taking in some of the local sporting culture during their stay.
The Rams have gone in the opposite direction. Sean McVay’s team left California on Tuesday evening and is scheduled to arrive around 24 hours before the game. The logic is that the players can effectively remain on their normal body clocks, rather than spending a week trying to adjust to Australian time. It’s an approach McVay has used before on international trips, including last year’s successful visit to London.
Whether one strategy proves better than the other could make this one of the most intriguing subplots of Week 1.
Either way, the setting should be spectacular. The MCG is about as far removed from SoFi Stadium or Levi’s Stadium as you can get, and with the NFL expecting around 100,000 fans through the gates, this should look and feel very different from your average Thursday night divisional game.
