Perfect Picks: Kansas City Chiefs

With the NFL Draft approaching we will be looking at each team and evaluating where they need to improve. In this particular series we will run a seven round mock using the Pro Football Network Mock Draft Simulator and find the ‘Perfect Picks’ for each franchise.

We will highlight four players that could help each team. This will feature picks 1 and 2, a mid round gem and a late round sleeper.

Round 1 - Trent McDuffie, Cornerback, Washington

The Chiefs have a decision to make in regards to Chavarious Ward come the off-season. This draft might persuade them to move on. There is going to be a number of highly talented corners available late in the first round. Trent McDuffie is one of them. Although he looks a bit shorter than his stated 5’11, he’s been ultra reliable in coverage during his three year stint as a Husky. Grading out above 80 each season per PFF, allowing a stingy 6.3 yards per catch.

Round 2 - Nik Bonitto, Edge, Oklahoma

Melvin Ingram was the pass rush spark the Chiefs needed at the backend of the year and finding another flyer off the edge would really enhance this D. Lining up next to Frank Clark and Chris Jones almost guarantees one on one pass rush situations. Nik Bonitto has the frame of a 3-4 linebacker who can thrive as a stand up rusher when allowed to pin his ears back.

Mid Round Gem - John Metchie III, Wide Receiver, Alabama

The Chiefs snaffle another big time weapon for Mahomes at this spot. Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce could use some help and in this scenario you can imagine John Metchie feasting. A torn ACL this season will affect his draft stock but someone will likely grab a steal. A polished route runner who would offer a chain moving presence in this high powered offense.

Late Round Sleeper - Spencer Burford, Offensive Tackle, UTSA

Orlando Brown is set to hit free agency so the Chiefs will need an answer to one of their tackle spots if he walks. A player like Burford is unlikely to provide an immediate solution but has some likeable traits. While he could use some added bulk to his 6’5 frame – he is currently sub 300lbs – his mobility is eye catching. Burford has plenty of tools to work with at the next level.
