Inside The Pocket #010: Quarterback Class - The 1983 NFL Draft

By Rob Ward

Beginning in 2018 and running through 2021, the Collapsing Pocket launched a new series of podcasts looking back at the iconic characters and biggest moments in the NFL, and what makes football the most  beautiful – and sometimes the ugliest – sport that we all know & love.

Known as the ‘Inside The Pocket’ series, The Touchdown will be relaunching these twenty episodes as part of the buildup to the 2023 season. The original creators Sam Akroyd, Simon Carroll and Rob Ward look back and offer their thoughts on how these legends and eras shaped the league we see today.

ITP #010: Quarterback Class - The 1983 NFL Draft

First Aired: 28th May 2020

To get one all-time quarterback in a draft is good going. To get two over the course of one weekend in late April is a very rare thing. How about three Hall of Famers – three of the biggest names in the history of the sport – all in the same year? That’s what happened in 1983 when Dan Marino, John Elway and Jim Kelly entered the NFL and went on to break records, cement legacies and make the supporters of the Dolphins, Broncos and Bills believe, for a time, that anything was possible.

In this episode of Inside The Pocket we reflect on the success of these three men, the journeys their careers took, whilst also asking the question; despite their accomplishments, with only two Super Bowl rings between them; should they have achieved even more?
