Detroit Lions Hard KNocks: Episode 4 Recap

By Tayyib Abu

Week 4 of Hard Knocks highlighted the looming roster decisions that the Detroit Lions’ coaches face. It is that time of the offseason when franchises trim rosters down to 53. Moreover, the episode focused on the defense, the Lions’ preseason game with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Here are the standout moments from episode four.

Aaron Glenn Lays Down The Law

The Lions were one of the worst defenses in the NFL last season. And after a shoddy performance in practice, Glenn let rip into his defenders. In an intense, expletive-laden rant, Glenn laid down the law. His defense responded on what the Lions labeled the ‘Longest Day.’ Aidan Hutchinson helped himself to several sacks as the Lions’ defense mauled the offensive line.

With the ferocity, length, and grueling nature of the session, veteran Lions beat reporters said the practice harked back to the days of two-day sessions. The defense won the day, and offensive line coach Hank Fraley told his players that some of them would not get a job with the Lions. For Glenn, it was the response he desired from his defense.

A Coachless Practice

Dan Campbell threw his players a curveball this week. He strode into the meeting room and told his players that they would run their own session. While it may seem a bit odd, it makes sense. Players can not always rely on coaches to help them; the best players solve problems on the field alone.

Bill Belichick often says Lawrence Taylor could work an offense’s blocking and protection schemes in just a few snaps. The Lions lost several heartbreaking games last season, but in the cold light of day, their inexperienced players made naive mistakes. Campbell is trying to instill self-disciple and an independent working mentality in his team. The coaches can’t fix everything.

Khalil Pimpleton's Story Ends

Local product Khalil Pimpleton has been one of the best stories to follow in the offseason. The energetic wideout showed flashes of talent and was in with a shot of making the roster. And then the Pittsburgh game happened…

It was Pimpleton’s last chance to impress, and he dropped the ball. Literally. 3rd string quarterback David Blough hit Pimpleton in the end zone; it was a sure touchdown. But, Pimpleton dropped the ball. The undrafted rookie did not see the field again. And the Lions released him a week later. Pimpleton’s story underlines the brutality and harsh realities of the NFL.
