What will Aaron Rodgers do in 2025?

By Andy Davies

Once again, Aaron Rodgers is one of the most talked about quarterbacks in the offseason.

Rodgers joined the New York Jets in the 2023 offseason after much media speculation. This came after a successful 18 years with the Green Bay Packers.

Despite his four MVP awards, Rodgers’ time with the Jets organisation was less than ideal. His first season ended after four offensive snaps and he failed to elevate the organisation in the way that they expected.

Rodgers was officially released in March 2025 and although he was offered a contract by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the same month, he has yet to decide on his future.

What does the future hold for Rodgers?

Will Rodgers become a Pittsburgh Steeler?

This has been deemed the most likely destination for Rodgers in 2025. He gave rise to this theory in recent days.

Making an appearance at an event hosted by rapper Mike Stud, Rodgers was asked whether he would ever play for the Chicago Bears.

Rodgers and the Bears fans had an interesting relationship. Often the tormentor of the NFC North organisation, he had the infamous line towards the end of his time in Green Bay that he still owned them. He was quick to deny any possibility of playing for Chicago, but gave a clue about his future.

He said: “No, but I believe there’s a team that might play on Chicago this year on a road trip.”

The Pittsburgh Steelers play the Bears in Week 12 of the 2025 NFL season. He will relish this opportunity, as well as the chance to play both the Packers and Vikings in the same year.

The Steelers have lost wide receiver George Pickens and running back Najee Harris. This could have been detrimental to the season. DK Metcalf arrived through the door prior to the Pickens trade and Jaylen Warren has proved to be a good running back in the NFL.

Rodgers will be attracted by this core of weapons, and a stable organisation under head coach Mike Tomlin.

Rodgers seems to want to give it one more year, but will he be snapped up? Or could he be forced into retirement if it gets closer to the season and he is still without a team?

Could Rodgers retire?

During the Jets’ Week 18 win over the Miami Dolphins (above) at MetLife Stadium, Rodgers threw for his 500th career touchdown pass. This would be a great time for Rodgers to retire. His aforementioned comments about Pittsburgh’s 2025 schedule suggests otherwise.

However, Rodgers did discuss the potential of retirement on an appearance on the YNK Podcast with Mike Stud. He was also open to the prospect of retiring as a Packer. He said: “I’ve thought about that, but I don’t understand what the reason for that is. I grew up a [49ers] fan and most of my favourite players retired as a Niner.

“If I didn’t, would that make a difference in how I’m viewed in the Packers’ eyes? There’s a lot of love for me and how I feel about the team.

“If I do or I don’t, I don’t think it should make a difference, I’m not sure yet. If they approached me about it, I probably would.”

Rodgers had a somewhat messy divorce from the Packers and there is a section on the fanbase that would not welcome such news.

Former Packer Brett Favre also went through a strained relationship with Packers fan, a position not helped by a move to the Minnesota Vikings.

There will be a cut off point for Rodgers should he still fail to make a decision. The longer he goes on without a team, the less chance there is of him being taken by a team. If this was ten years ago, he would have been most likely snapped up by now.

Even if Rodgers was allowing this much time to decide, teams would happily snap him up with a week to go due to his talent.

He is not the same quarterback as he once was and at his age, only a handful of teams would benefit from his services.

It is going to be an interesting few months for Rodgers.
