Why Bill Belichick Will Succeed At North Carolina

By Max Dorsey

On December 11th The University of North Carolina made the decision to replace national-championship winning head coach, Mac Brown, with Super Bowl winning head coach: Bill Belichick. When UNC officially announced the decision social media was full of different takes about whether Bill will find success at UNC, or if the hire was a massive mistake.

To me, this is a home run hire. We’re talking about a guy that has been a Super Bowl champion nine times. NINE TIMES. To think that he won’t find success at the college level baffles me.

Now the number one take I saw online about why Coach Belichick would fail at UNC was because he wouldn’t be able to navigate the NIL world that has taken college football by storm over the last three years. To me, that’s a preposterous take. To say that the man who was not only the head coach, but the general manager and mastermind behind a six-time Super Bowl winning team in New England, wouldn’t be able to figure out how to navigate the transfer portal is flat-out dumb. Belichick’s GM experience only furthers his credentials to succeed in this era of college football. Not only does he have that expertise, but who in their right mind wouldn’t want to play for him?

I think Belichick is going to have some of the top recruits in the country at UNC within a year. His pitch to kids who are looking for their college football home, should simply be: Do you want to go to the NFL? If their answer is yes, then I don’t think there is a better place in the country to develop into an NFL player than UNC. On the Pat McCafee show, Bill said that if he were to take over a college program it’d run exactly like an NFL program, and essentially be a pipeline to the NFL. If I was looking to make it to the big leagues, I’d be sprinting to go play for Bill Belichick.

Over the next couple of weeks, I expect Belichick to make a huge splash in the transfer portal, getting some of the best available talent in the country to come to UNC. Not only that but next season it would not surprise me if, under Belichick, UNC makes it to the ACC championship. People really seem to underestimate how much coaching matters. Take a look at how, with the help of a weak schedule, Curt Cignetti completely turned around Indiana’s program. If you’re going to tell me with a straight face that Bill can’t get UNC to 10 wins without having to play Clemson or Miami next year, then you straight up do not understand the value of coaching.

There was not a single better coach on the market for the Tarheels, and they nailed this hire. I’m excited to see where Belichick takes this program over the next five years.
