Pro's:

  • Explosive, ‘slingshot’ running back who sees a chance and turns on the jets
  • Impressive agility in tight areas, always finding his way out of trouble
  • Demonstrates good vision and knows his best route to yardage
  • Intelligent runner, able to set up his blocks and open up cutback lanes
  • Tough through contact and will fight for extra yardage
  • Has breakaway speed once the field opens up for him
  • Creative playmaker with the ball in space – a candidate for a designed, bespoke playbook
  • Underutilised as a receiver but has the suddenness to create separation and be an asset
  • Dangerous kick returner, a role he made his own at Tennessee

Con's:

  • Needs to get stronger. Lightweight lower half betrays his determination upon contact
  • For all his agility, he doesn’t break that many tackles. If he’s hit, he’s down
  • Pad height is an issue – would be much more effective through contact with better leverage
  • Hesitant to force the issue if the anticipated lane doesn’t develop
  • One or two instances of impatience on outside runs, not allowing his blockers to get set up

The Verdict:

“Ty Chandler is an intriguing running back who has so much agility that teams will want another look at him. Part of a backfield committee at Tennessee, Chandler transferred to Chapel Hill for his final season and it paid dividends; stepping in for the departed Javonte Williams and Michael Carter and racking up 1,300 all purpose yards and 14 touchdowns. Something of an enigma, Chandler looks and sometimes plays like he’s a physical back, but doesn’t particularly have the core strength to be one. Not to worry; what Chandler lacks in power he more than makes up for in athleticism, needing just a hint of daylight to make a big play. His agility and speed have also aided him as a kick returner, a role he perfected before leaving Knoxville, and this versatility will without doubt help him get drafted. He’ll enter the league as a complementary back and special teams contributor with a bigger role as he develops.”
