2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

BU_FB_Bernard_Terrel_2019

Film Watched: Oklahoma 2021, BYU 2021, Oklahoma State 2021

Pro's:

  • Intuitive linebacker with excellent pre-snap play diagnosis and heightened instincts for the football
  • Ultra-competitive. Sets the tone for the rest of the defense with relentless levels of effort
  • Got some good twitch off the snap, aided by his knowledge of what’s about to come
  • Scrapes behind the line of scrimmage effortlessly, and does well to keep off angled blocks
  • Has the agility to cover large zones against the pass, and the reactions to close on the ball quickly
  • Production monster. 317 tackles (2 x 100+ tackle seasons), 31.5 TFL’s, 3 INT’s and 16.5 sacks in 42 games at Baylor
  • Has the speed to see an increase in blitz packages at the next level
  • Special teams standout

Con's:

  • Worrying injury history. Missed most of two separate seasons with significant ailments (foot, shoulder)
  • Lightweight. Aggression and commitment mask a significant deficiency in play strength
  • Withstanding blocks and holding his gap integrity is difficult
  • Will get wrapped up by sticky blockers and finds it difficult to rid himself of clamps
  • Significant missed tackles on tape – which shot up in his final season in Waco

The Verdict:

“A coaches dream, Terrel Bernard possesses the dedication and mental capacity to be a standout linebacker prospect, but his small frame betrays his ability to be a true three-down contributor at the next level. A film room junkie with rare processing ability on the field, Bernard was relied upon by Baylor to relay what he saw to the rest of his teammates, and didn’t disappoint in effort when it was time to make plays. Bernard consistently outplayed his size in college and will likely continue to do so in the NFL, but the deficiency in play strength will be much more apparent. Teams will also want to examine him medically, but his speed and field vision give him every opportunity of making a roster with nickel linebacker duties in his future, as well as being a valued commodity on most special team units.”
