2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Kyle Philips

Film Watched: Oregon 2021, Oregon 2020, Arizona 2019

Pro's:

  • Elusive, quick-witted receiver who flourished in the slot for UCLA
  • Incredible foot quickness off the line and with the ball in hand – finds openings that don’t exist
  • Polished route runner, displaying excellent timing with hitches, fakes and breaks
  • Good top speed. Can be a threat on more vertical routes.
  • Yard after catch master
  • Impressive vision – diagnoses the defense pre-snap, and knows where the vulnerabilities will be
  • 100% effort guy. Runs hot on every play and constantly throws himself into the run block game
  • Special teams contributor and weapon as a kickoff and punt returner

Con's:

  • Slot receiver only. Size and arm length preclude him from playing on the outside.
  • Frustrating drops on tape
  • Lean lower half and short arms fight against him as a run blocker despite his dedication
  • Boxed out at the catch point by more physical, long defenders
  • Will be subjected to much more press coverage at the next level, disturbing his route timing
  • Overthinks it on occasion – lots of lateral movement for dubious vertical gain

The Verdict:

“Kyle Philips won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. He’s physically limited, somewhat by his size but mostly by his length, which really reduces his versatility as part of an offense. Projecting as a slot receiver only at the next level, Philips will have an uphill task acclimatising to the bigger badder world of the NFL, but he does have some very intriguing attributes that should help the learning curve. A jitterbug with the ball in his hands, Philips has a knack of making something out of nothing and was a reliable outlet for DTR at UCLA. The former Bruin brings the level of commitment and aggression of someone 4 inches taller and 20lbs heavier, and it is that unique blend that should see him coveted by a handful of teams looking for a dynamic returner who will fight for snaps as a complimentary piece on offense.”
