Film Watched: Oklahoma 2021, BYU 2021, Oklahoma State 2021 (B12 CCG)

Pro's:

  • Elite quicks. Explosive, springy safety that can reach every blade of grass on the field
  • Effortless change of direction, and can mirror routes developing in front of him
  • Smooth backpedal in both man and zone, and can flip and run with no loss of speed
  • Elite instincts. Plays on his toes and breaks on the ball before it’s left the QB’s hand
  • Natural feel for angles of pursuit to meet the football and minimising yardage conceded
  • Brings aggression and intent to his run duties. Zero flinch throwing his nose into contact
  • Routinely diagnoses plays early, and communicates information to teammates
  • High character prospect. Locker room galvaniser and was trusted with leadership responsibilities by coaches

Con's:

  • A little lightweight. Skinny lower half means power through contact doesn’t match his intensity
  • Sometimes reckless through contact as he tries to throw all of his weight into the tackle
  • Modest length, and doesn’t disrupt the catch point consistently
  • Doesn’t light up the stats sheer; just four interceptions and ten pass breakups in 46 games

The Verdict:

“Has anyone improved their draft stock quite as much as Jalen Pitre? Despite five successful years and 46 games at Waco, Pitre wasn’t particularly held in high esteem - which was fraudulent considering how impactful he was on a defense that was a major reason Baylor took home the Big 12 Championship and The Sugar Bowl last year. A do-it-all safety, Pitre was the eyes and ears of The Bears’ secondary, often playing the robber role and as proficient in deep coverage as he was coming down in run support. Pitre battles some less than ideal measurements, but it simply does not affect his game - a standout Senior Bowl performance attests to the ability and competitiveness he brings to a football field. Pitre is a versatile, high-character prospect that looks capable of being employed in any role a co-ordinator cares for - Give him one season and I think he’ll be a starter in the NFL.”
