2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Grant Calcaterra

Film Watched: Memphis 2021, TCU 2021

Pro's:

  • Quick pass-catching tight end who finds a way to get open and offer an outlet
  • Impressive athleticism for his size – good burst off the line, and sharp in and out of his breaks
  • Savvy route runner who knows how to attack the hip of the defender and garner separation
  • Has the straight line speed to attack the seam and be a vertical threat
  • Impressive concentration and ball tracking, making the necessary adjustments to bring the ball in
  • High pointer with good leap timing and knows how to use his body to his advantage
  • High character guy that teammates respect – team captain at both Oklahoma and SMU
  • Didn’t miss a beat after returning from medical retirement

Con's:

  • Major medical red flags – suffered multiple concussions at Oklahoma and ‘retired’ in 2019
  • Willing as a blocker with developed technique, but let down by a lack of core strength
  • Similar lack of lower body power limits his effectiveness in pass protection
  • Surprisingly easy to tackle as a tight end, even by smaller defenders
  • Can be bullied early in his route by bump and run coverage, disturbing his rhythm

The Verdict:

“Two years ago, Grant Calcaterra was considered one of the best tight ends in college football, with a guaranteed NFL career ahead of him. But injury has a nasty way of shattering dreams, and after taking one hit to the head too many, Calcaterra medically retired from football just two games into his junior year. After spending a year out and rethinking, he returned to the field with SMU and looked like he’d never been away, posting the most receptions and yards of his college career. Despite having no medical setbacks as a senior, the durability concerns for Calcaterra are real, and likely dictate how his draft weekend pans out. But as a pure football talent, there is a lot to like as a reliable receiver who can be a factor at every level of the field.”
