- Huge arms, with good strength running all the way to his fingertips
- Aggressive off the snap and gives everything he’s got on every play
- Uses length & strength to control contact, stacking blockers before shedding to the football
- Has the anchor to comfortably set the edge against the run
- Has enough quicks to match up with zone blockers and maintain his gap integrity
- Knows how to stave off contact as a rusher and work to edges to get pocket penetration
- Has experience in multiple fronts and used at multiplied alignments for Minnesota
Con's:
- Stiff – a bigger guy with limited fluidity, reliant on bullrushes to get home to the QB
- Blockers aren’t challenged around the corner; little agility or dip to get under hands
- One-dimensional pass rusher; double moves are lethargic as he struggles to change course at speed
- Inconsistent eyes in the backfield, and has let ball carriers by when two-gapping
- Much of his production came playing opposite Boye Mafe, who commanded more attention
The Verdict:
“Esezi Otomewo is an intimidating opponent for tackles with his size, length and aggression. Despite not having the fluidity and nous to really challenge blockers athletically, he’ll be damn sure to give them sixty minutes of work, and any opportunity they give him to assert his physicality will be taken advantage of. Otomewo looks like another prospect in this edge class which has a little more upside to unlock; more attention to the mental aspect of the game will make him a much more proficient run defender, and with some modest vertical athleticism he can be a real edge setter in a three man front with pass rushing upside to kick inside in the subpackage. Despite some obvious limitations, this three-down capability will see him be a valued rotational contributor to an NFL defense.”
