Quick, agile center who has valuable experience playing at both guard spots in Tempe
Elite quicks; bursts off the line and sets the standard on stretch plays or in outside zone
Plays within himself, driving at the hip of the opponent but letting contact come to him
Excellent knee bend as he drives up into contact and gets way more push than expected
Tenacious punch that shows consistently good timing
Will not let go if he manages to get his hands inside and onto jersey
Impressive base despite a skinnier lower half; keeps himself square to pass rushers
Con's:
Undersized. Struggles to blast defenders off the ball on downblocks
Hands are busy but don’t deliver a blow that will stun his opponent
Arm strength at full extension can be compromised; vulnerable at the top of the arc
Hand placement not as consistent as his timing, and will slide off
Body can get to landmarks ahead of his feet on occasion
The Verdict:
“An interesting center prospect, Dohnovan West brings impressive athleticism to the core of an offensive line. Alert and aware of assignments, and a good communicator to his teammates for the Sun Devils, West aligns his quickness with good vision and (for the most part) technique to be a proficient pass protector and capable run blocker when on the move. Vertical run assignments are less effective where West has to match face up against a defensive tackle’s power, and coming in at less than 300lbs that is likely to be a problem that is even more exposed as he gets to the NFL. With that in mind, an offense that avoids power or gap concepts would be an ideal landing spot, and as a potential backup at the next level West brings the added bonus of being able to play anywhere on the interior. West might stick around as a pro longer than you’d think.”
