2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Danny Gray

Film Watched: TCU 2021, Houston 2021, Tulane 2021

Pro's:

  • Filthy quick receiver with good distribution of muscle mass throughout his frame
  • Rocket boosters in his cleats; fires off the line of scrimmage and stacks DB’s immediately
  • Quick in the early stages before terrifying long speed, tearing past helpless defenders
  • Lethal with the ball in space, eating up turf in the blink of an eye
  • Good hands, with no notable drops on tape
  • Underappreciated short area agility, with more to come as a receiver closer to the line of scrimmage
  • Impressive footwork to out-twitch press coverage looking to jam him off the snap
  • Quick growth at SMU, doubling yardage & TD’s from 2020 to 2021. Plenty there for further development

Con's:

  • Lack of length hinders his ability to get off press once he’s engaged
  • Arm length also problematic at the catch point, where timing and body control have gotten him by
  • Disappointing lack of physicality throughout his game, be it blocking, contact or contested catches
  • Restricted route tree at SMU; gave him space to dominate vertically, but little work in short areas
  • Reliant on speed to create separation, when he has the agility to destroy coverage with sharp breaks

The Verdict:

“After spending two years at JuCo, Danny Gray headed back home to Dallas and became a key contributor for The Mustangs the last two seasons. Possessing jaw-dropping speed, Gray was favourably utilised as a deep threat in the Mustangs’ spread offense, and his mere presence on the field helped the run game and his opposite number Reggie Roberson to get theirs too. Teams will be concerned that he’s a little one-dimensional with a noticeable lack of aggressiveness to his game, but as a two year starter at the FBS level I’d argue he’s got a lot more in his locker that has yet to be unleashed. With the obvious agility, Gray is a candidate to be one of those receivers who has a better NFL career than his collegiate one, and worthy of a punt on day three.”
