Pro's:

  • Rocked up linebacker with good muscle distribution. Ideal measurables for an NFL linebacker
  • Doesn’t want for play strength. Ignores zone blocks to his hips, and able to control face-up attention
  • Excellent awareness and field vision; knows when & where the football is coming through the line
  • Able to manhandle attention and disengage to the ball carrier
  • Physical tackler, enveloping ball carriers and stopping them in their tracks securely
  • Better use of his strength as a senior to be a backfield penetrator – 6 sacks and 12.5 TFL’s in 2021
  • Production exploded after transferring to Ole Miss – more tackles in 2021 (109) than in three years at Maryland (107)
  • Team galvaniser and momentum changer – teammates look to him when backs against the wall

Con's:

  • Lack of movement skills – range to operate between the tackles only
  • Heavy footed in pursuit, and despite effort doesn’t have the speed to hunt down outside plays
  • Stiff and knows it – is careful not to offer daylight on his backside, but agile ball carriers will expose him
  • Does a good job getting depth in zone coverage, but click and close is sluggish
  • Not a candidate to be covering RB’s or TE’s man to man

The Verdict:

“Chance Campbell made a business decision to transfer to Ole Miss for his final year in college, and it paid off big time; the fearsome linebacker revelled in a more downhill and aggressive defense, racking up production and even adding blitz capabilities to his portfolio. Campbell’s game is centred around his size and physicality - every advantage he is able to create for himself is done with power, from displacing blocks for backfield access to sealing the edge against zone runs in rare OLB reps. He complements his play strength with a good understanding of his role and excellent execution, but his limited agility (despite contradictory combine numbers) will stand out more at the next level. Some scouts will consider him a one-dimensional inside thumper, but there was enough growth in 2021 to suggest a bit of upside. Campbell is worthy of a day three pick.”
