2022 NFL DRAFT PROSPECT REPORT

Film Watched: NC State 2021, Louisville 2019, Florida 2019

Pro's:

  • Ultra-aggressive safety who looks to impose his will as a hard-hitting, downhill enforcer
  • Tackles with such ferocity he hits ball carriers into the next quarter
  • Loves to find work near the line of scrimmage. A natural working off blocks and fitting the run
  • No off-switch; 100% effort, and will chase down a play from the other side of the field
  • Racks up the stats; 173 tackles in his Miami career
  • A sensitive radar and is quick to process what he sees
  • Good click and close from shallow zones to come down to the catch point
  • Shows versatility in and around the line of scrimmage – rusher, off-ball linebacker, or box safety

Con's:

  • Makes some dumb decisions. Been ejected four times for targeting at Miami
  • Some recklessness to his tackles, and has given up big plays trying to make the big hit
  • Limited range – doesn’t have the wheels to cover both sidelines as a center fielder
  • Some stiffness in man coverage, particularly flipping his hips through his transitions
  • Lack of ball playing skills – just two interceptions and six pass breakups in 48 games at college

The Verdict:

“Amari Carter spent five years laying down the law for the Hurricanes; a bruising hitter and unafraid to throw his weight around, Carter was tasked with setting the physical standard for his teammates to follow. He certainly accomplished that - Carter was a tackling machine for Miami, operating predominantly as a strong safety that was let off the leash to combat an opponents’ run game. Carter did display some versatility, but it was always forward thinking, and there is some untapped pocket penetration skills to be developed. For Carter to stick around in the NFL, he’ll need to add an element of control to his game; far too many unnecessary penalties in his collegiate career where from him not being able to distinguish between competitive and egregious. If he can rein it in a little, there’s a ceiling of a nickel safety role player and special teams contributor at the next level.”
