Five Wide: 2025 Week Seven

By Thomas Willoughby

Everyone wave goodbye to the NFL. It’s going now. Four straight weeks of Irish and British tinged American Football has come to an end with a blowout. I was in a sports bar near Marylebone Station on Sunday, and watched as lads decked out in Jaguars gear streamed in from the moment the third quarter ended. That’s how poor they were.

Next season’s round of games ought to be interesting. There’ll be one in Dublin, of course, likely featuring Kansas City. Over in the United Kingdom, however, things getting a little murkier. The current deal of at least 2 games a season at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium runs until 2029, but the Jacksonville Jaguars’ current deal with Wembley Stadium comes to an end this season. A new deal is expected to be struck, granted, but nothing is in place right now.

Interestingly, the team struck a deal with the city of Jacksonville to allow them to play up to 6 games in London, which came into effect from this season. So, I expect the Jaguars to be hosting 2 games here next season. Look forward to that.

Right, no more rambling. Onto the good stuff.

Welcoomb Back

Can I just say how enjoyable the Sunday afternoon experience has been these past few weeks? Since the NFL rocked up to Dublin, Channel 5’s “Big Game Day Live” broadcasts have earned my eyeballs. And what a joy it was to see my close and personal friend, Nat Coombs, back on the box, anchoring their coverage of the game alongside Osi Umenyoira.

NFL fans of a certain age will remember him and Mike Carlson’s hosting efforts of Channel 4 and Channel 5’s Sunday and Monday Night Broadcasts. It’s been lovely to see Nat back behind the camera for these games. The broadcasts themselves were a no-frills affair played as straight as you’ll get from an NFL screening. Lots of talk, no big tactics board or special effects. A stark contrast to the Big Game Night game show immediately following what unfolded at Croke Park, Spurs, and Wembley Stadium. But they’ve been nice. Refreshing, almost.

I always feel like it’s important to support the free to air options when we get them, if for no other reason than to reward those broadcasters for giving it a go. And fair play to Channel 5, their efforts over the past month have been extremely welcome. It’s a shame their midday coverage isn’t being extended into Berlin and Madrid next month, really. For the time being, though, credit where credit is due. Well done them!

Weekly history

Another London weekend, another page in the history books written. When people look back at “Jacksonville Jaguars 7- 35 Los Angeles Rams”, they’ll see two entries directly underneath it. The first was logged before the games had even started. Before the weekend had even arrived. The Los Angeles Rams, in stark contrast to the common consensus, opted to arrive in the UK later than any team before them. They landed on Saturday morning. For the sake of comparison, the Jaguars arrived on Monday

The arrival and preparation of an international game is key. We’ve seen teams flit between long and short stints overseas, and the team that acclimatises the longest tends to be the one who comes out on top. See the Broncos last weekend, for example. But the first piece of history led directly to the second; the Rams were amazing. Matthew Stafford was amazing. He threw 5 touchdowns, becoming the first QB in history to score 5 touchdowns in London. Without Puka Nakua, might I add. Arguably, that adds even more credence to his knighthood campaign.

It’s fun to see new records be added every week for a month. In a few weeks time, we’ll see Germany and Spain get their chance to add to the history books. And I’ll be here to tell you all about them.

Kitwatch 2025: Part IV

Hey it’s my favourite segment! Just the two uniforms to discuss this week. Would you like the good or the bad to start us off? Good? Ok, good. Fresh off the uniform match up of the year, the Atlanta Falcons travelled to the San Francisco 49ers for Sunday night football. The Falcons were in their regular, non-throwback attire, which doesn’t need discussing. But the 49ers donned their own slice of yesteryear, rocking a nod to the year 1994, a season in which they won the Super Bowl, might I add. As you know, I’m a sucker for teams going retro, and this is no exception. The 49ers actually have two throwback uniforms; this, and a white number which they pulled out in week 3 (before we kicked off kitwatch this season), but they’ll be returning to the red again in week 17. They also have a Rivalries uniform to come later this season, so look forward to that.

I am of the opinion that, pound for pound, the Los Angeles Chargers have the best set of uniforms in the league. Powder blue is always a winner, and their white uniform works well too, but they’ve opted to refresh their alternate jerseys for 2025. A nice navy ensemble will be coming this coming Thursday Night Football against the Vikings, but this week we got the debut of their “gold” alternate get up.

First things first, that’s not gold. That’s yellow. Second of all, no. Not for me. I’m not sure it was helped by the Colts wearing all white. The bright on bright action made for an uncomfortable watch. But I’m not having all yellow uniforms in the NFL. Justin Herbert’s out here looking like the QB for the Savannah Bananas American Football branch. Bin.

In Loving Memory

Here lies the career of Justin Fields. Far too short and far sad for anyone who put the time into diving into the QB class of 2021. At the time, I had him as the 2nd best quarterback of that group. As a side note, that has to be the most disappointing crop of players in recent history. Not worst, I’m not saying that. Disappointing. Have any of them lived up to their vaunted potential? Lawrence is the best of the lot and he’s nowhere near the level we expected him to hit. Zach Wilson and Trey Lance are back ups for the Chargers and the Dolphins respectively. Mac Jones is doing ok right now, but his time as a starter in San Francisco probably ends once Purdy’s foot starts working again. Horrible.

But this is about Justin Fields. A man I repeatedly banged the table for the Falcons to take 4th overall in 2021. They did not, instead taking Kyle Pitts (another conversation for another day). Fields landed in Chicago, where he managed to play 3 seasons before being binned off in favour of Caleb Williams. His time in Pittsburgh last season was interesting because he was effectively a placeholder for Russell Wilson. He’s ended up on the worst team in the league, and is contributing to their plight in a big way.

They’re 0-7, that’s the headline. But he’s looked alright in spells. Unfortunately the bulk of those spells came in week one. Since then, he’s started 3 separate games where he’s failed to register more than 50 passing yards. Over the past fortnight, he’s managed a total of 91 passing yards across 2 games. He’s not turned the ball over, but he’s simply not throwing the ball.

And, look, there are other factors at play. The Jets’ offensive line gives whoever’s under centre roughly half a seconds worth of protection. They have one professional receiver, himself incapable of catching the ball regularly. Tyrod Taylor replaced him against the Panthers and, while he managed to eclipse Fields’ total yardage over the past 2 games, threw 2 interceptions himself. The Jets are a bad situation for any quarterback to step into, let alone one throw from pillar to post since they were drafted.

It feels like Fields’ time as a starter in the NFL has come to an end before he was ever really given the opportunity to become one. He’ll likely bounce around as a back up for the next few years, stepping into for designed QB runs as an when. He might even end up in Atlanta after all, and bring that story full circle. But the odds of a Darnold-like career revival seem slim. A real shame. We’ll always have my Madden 22 save, Justin.

Misery in Miami

Sunday gave us one of the ugliest match ups in recent NFL history. Both the Dolphins and the Browns sat on a 1-5 record, and met up in Cleveland to determine which of the pair would be vying for a top 2 draft pick heading into 2026. On that note, congratulations to Dillon Gabriel on becoming the 3rd rookie quarterback to get their first win! Good for him.

Imagine getting blown out by the Cleveland Browns, man. Cleveland ran out 31-6 winners, with three(!) touchdowns scored by Quinshon Judkins. What’s striking is just how atrocious the Dolphins are. I think we all expected them to be a bit rubbish this season, but Tua’s out here throwing to no one but the opposition defense. 100 passing yards, 3 interceptions, benched. Brutal.

That’s it for Mike McDaniel in Miami, I think. All the noise is that he’s not expected to be fired, but you cannot lose a game like this, during the season you’re having, and not expect genuine consequences. I wonder if the Dolphins see McDaniel losing for the rest of the season as the best option for the long term success of the organisation. They’ve gone from tanking for Tua to tanking WITH Tua in the space of 6 seasons. But I can’t see McDaniel calling plays there next season. It’s done.
